Happy Birthday to Louis Daguerre

Today is Louis Daguerre’s birthday. Daguerre was a French born artist. He worked for a time with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (pronounced neeps) who is credit with producing the world’s first permanent photograph in 1822; a Heliograph titled “View from the Window at Le Gras“. It was through this partnership, and years of experimentation, that he developed the Daguerreotype. The Daguerreotype process is credited with making photography available to the more common man.

So all you iPhoneographers out there owe this man a huge debt of gratitude.

More awesome portraiture

It’s no secret that I love great portraiture. Dutch photographer Joeri Bosma manages to make the difficult practice of self portraiture look effortless and impressive. As entries in a picture a day project, he has shown that self portraiture is not relegated to pictures of narcissistic, emo teenagers taken in the bathroom mirror with an iPhone. Hanging my Art

So I have finally gotten a chance to hang my art. I have a group of photos from my At Work project on display at Panama Red Coffee Company in downtown Livermore. I was also fortunate enough to be able to display my work with my wife, Joanna Crawshaw.

At Work is a series of portraits. I believe a that a good portrait should tells a person’s story. To do that, you don’t necessarily have to use a picture of that persons face. I chose their hands. There is a lot more to it, but you will have to check out the show and read the artist’s statement.

Always Nice to See Your Work in Print

I believe that providing a good education can be the single most important thing you can do for a person. I keep close ties with Las Positas College in Livermore, California. I received my music degree there when I was younger and have taken some photography classes in the past. The staff is always great and the head of the photo department, Deanna Horvath, is phenomenal. She is one of those rare examples of an instructor who always puts her students first.

Every year Las Postias holds a student photography show and I have be fortunate enough to be asked to serve as a judge a couple times. This year they had a brilliant idea, an annual for the department. It serves as a public record of the wonderful work the students in their program put out, and a way to raise some much needed funds. You can pick up a copy, and help out the program in the process, at Blurb.com

The exciting news in all of this, the department was kind enough to include work from associates of the program, including the judges. So one of my own pieces is included. No matter how many time you see you work in print, it never gets old.

Shoes, Shoes, Everywhere

The work is continuing on the shoe book. I am past the half way point and can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am still really enjoying the project, but I will be glad to see it complete. I could really use a big win like this. I’ve been pouring a lot of energy into this project and taking the time to learn a lot more about Photoshop as I go. I am still not a hug fan of overly processed photos, but I am learning just what it can add to my creativity.
The boots you see here are on loan from a good friend. They are the kind of boots that just beg to be abused. Nice and heavy, the kind that are made to work in. I love the buckles here. Laces are vulnerable. They can be snagged and torn. Buckles can handle the kind of atrocities that a good pair of work boots encounter.
I was really set on borrowing every shoe in the book from friends, but I am thinking that it’s time to branch out. After two years of plinking away at things, I want to make a big push and finish things off. Hopefully I can knock out a bunch this weekend.

Recentering

It’s been a rough year so far. In light of recent events, I’ve have decided to recenter things around here. I am refocusing my efforts and concentrating on the two true passions I have in life: writing and photography. No more frivolous posts. Well, less of them anyways. Look for a short written piece soon, but for now some of my most recent photography. Hot from the “Shop”, this is a piece from my “Leaving it All Behind” series. I hope you enjoy. National Geographic Has Way Too Much Time

What kid didn’t dream up floating away on a bunch of balloons. Okay, for some of us it was more a nightmare, but a dream all the same.

The folks at National Geographic decided to realize Disney’s take on a childhood fantasy and recreate the house from Disney’s UP. Wow, I can’t begin to imagine how cool it would be to work on a project like this one. First of all, I just love building cool stuff. Then, somebody get to photograph this it. I have long envied the assignments, and talent, of National Geographic photographers. More so now. Add to that creating a life sized version of something from one of Disney’s films and you have the makings of a dream gig.

Off to a running start for 2011, a little late

I’ve had to take a break. In the three months since you heard from me last I have bought a condo, been in a wedding, renovated said condo and moved. It’s been busy.

The good news is, I’m back at things. I have a meeting with my illustrator for my first foray into comic book writing next week. I am anticipating good things. My goal is to have a finished product ready so show at APE this year. Think good thoughts for me.

I have some other projects that have been put on hold by the move that I will be trying to find the time for as well. Those being: My shoe book, and the second draft of my short novel.

Art is upon us

Well, the Artwalk is here. It’s been a big push to get ready for this, and I smell an all-nighter on the horizon. It’s always worth it though. Especially when you are all going to come see me, right?

I will be at ABC Music Source, located at 2156 1st St here in Livermore. I’ll have prints for sale and previews of my upcoming photobook, A Shoe’s Story. I will also be available to discuss any photo projects you may have in mind as well as answer any questions you might have about the American Photo Project.
