What kid didn’t dream up floating away on a bunch of balloons. Okay, for some of us it was more a nightmare, but a dream all the same.

The folks at National Geographic decided to realize Disney’s take on a childhood fantasy and recreate the house from Disney’s UP. Wow, I can’t begin to imagine how cool it would be to work on a project like this one. First of all, I just love building cool stuff. Then, somebody get to photograph this it. I have long envied the assignments, and talent, of National Geographic photographers. More so now. Add to that creating a life sized version of something from one of Disney’s films and you have the makings of a dream gig.

Read the article over at My Modern Met, if you think the ensuing envy won’t drive you nuts.

I’m making and intuitive leap here.

I can’t help but wonder just what the government is going to do with his collection. While I am sure that there are numerous geeks working for the government who are holding this bust under the nose of the their wise-cracking colleges as proof that comic book collecting is indeed a worthwhile endeavor, I highly doubt that the government is going to do anything useful with it. Like say, auction it off and use the proceeds to whittle away at the national debt. Or distribute them to less advantaged geeks. I doubt we’ll be able to follow this case and find out, but we can speculate on what should happen.

What do you think they should be doing with the collection?

I am a huge fan of Ghostbusters. I even loved the animated series when I was a kid, even if Egon did look like he had cannoli on his head. That doesn’t mean we need another movie. This piece from Bloody Horror got the horror part right on this one. We don’t need another Ghostbusters. The first was awesome, the second – not so much, but still palatable, and the animation was great. I don’t care if Dan Aykroyd is writing it, it will not top the first one and will most likely set a new standard for just how bad sequels can get. Please Dan, please. Let sleeping dogs lie.

They did it. Jeff Deck and Benjamin Herson actually did it. In 2008 these grammar crusaders did what many of us who love language wish we could. Armed with their typo correction kit (e.g., Sharpies, White-Out and chalk), they traveled the country correcting typos in public signage. Then, wrote a book about it, i.e., The Great Typo Hunt.

On their two and a half month mission they completed a circuitous route around the United Sates and did as much learning about race relations, education, and workplace issues as they did correcting of typos.

They have since written a book and launched a second tour of the country, this time to promote their book. I wonder how much correcting they’ll be doing this time? They’ll be in San Francisco in September, maybe I can ask them my self.

What crazy typos have you seen out there? Send me a picture, the best one will win a prize. A typo free prize. Winner will be chosen the first week of September.

One of my favorite summer rituals is Shakespeare in the Park produced by the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. I enjoy attending the performance of a Shakespearean play I have never seen on stage; their are not many left. I haven’t even gotten around to reading this one. Two Gentlemen of Verona shares themes with many works by the great bard: confused love, questionable commitment, cross dressing. I won’t go further into any sort of analysis because it has been done time and again by those much more scholarly than I. Besides, it would be in appropriate to offer any analysis when I haven’t read the play for myself. I hate relying on someone else’s interpretation to make my conclusions. I will say, however, that Silvia’s character was masterful and I would love to see the actor who played Luchetta perform again.

I am always somewhat inspired by Shakespeare in the Park and usually find myself making my own study of whatever masterpiece they are offering. This year will be no different, I just have not gotten around to it. I typical learn something about Shakespeare and his work from this process, but this year I discovered something unexpected. Shakespeare tried to hide it, I guess he doesn’t want it well known, but I caught it. Lucky for you I am will to share. According to master William, love is, in fact, a potato. That’s right. He says it plain as day in Two Gentlemen of Verona. See for yourself: Act II, Scene iv, Line 91. Valentine informs Sylvia that, “Why, lady, Love hath twenty pair of eyes.” The only thing I have ever seen with twenty pair of eyes is, a potato.

He could not be more correct. Love is never clean. We often have to dig deep for love and trudge through the mud to find and feed love. And then my friends, just when we think we have love figured out, that we can let it rest, our in attention allows unwanted growths to sprout from our love, and, if they are not addressed, will render love unpalatable.

So there you have it. Love = Potato

Be sure to tell that special someone, “I potato you.” often.
